Conference details

We're thrilled to be coming to New Zealand this year. The 1.5 day conference will be held on Thursday 4 and Friday 5 July at the National Library of New Zealand in Wellington. We are also offering virtual attendance via Zoom.

Morning, lunch and afternoon tea will be provided on the first day, with morning tea on the second day.

All conference attendees are also welcome to attend a conference dinner on the evening of Thursday 4 July. Dinner tickets available here.

In line with this year's theme, we will cover the following topics:

  • Regulation of charities
  • Charities law - Te Ao Māori and Pasifika
  • Commercial activities of charities and tax
  • Human rights and charity law
  • Measuring social impact
  • Charity law and religion
  • Reporting, compliance and the charity sector
  • Reflections on charities law reform
  • Cy-pres reform: comparative perspectives

See the draft program here.

How to secure a ticket

1. Consider whether you need to renew your membership with CLAANZ

CLAANZ has moved to an annual membership model whereby renewal will occur at the end of each financial year, in the lead-up to the annual conference. Ad hoc membership will also be accepted throughout the year.

What this means for you:

  • If you became a member or renewed in the second half of 2023, there is no need to renew again now. Your membership will continue until 30 June 2025.
  • All others, we kindly ask you to please renew your membership by choosing a membership option when selecting member-priced tickets. Your current CLAANZ membership will continue until 30 June 2024 so will need to be renewed for the conference.
  • If you are not yet a member but would like to be, welcome!
  • If you are not yet a member but would like to attend the conference, please choose a non-member ticket.

If you’re not sure about your current membership status, please email admin@claanz.org.au for an update.

2. Choose a conference ticket

Access the registration page. Choose a membership ticket and conference ticket.

3. Secure a dinner ticket

We'll be holding a dinner for conference delegates after proceedings on the first day, Thursday 4 July, at the historic Thistle Inn

Dinner will be two courses (entree and main) - please purchase a conference dinner ticket at the cost price of $50 AUD if you'd like to join us, and list any dietary requirements the venue will need to factor in. We hope you can make it.

Ticket types

Tickets range in price for this hybrid in-person and online event. An added complication for this year's event is navigating trans-Tasman GST issues; please bear with us regarding the multiple ticket options. The total ticket price (in AUD) will include a small additional online booking fee via Humanitix which goes to charity.

Member pricing for both in person and online is offered to any organisations registering 10 or more people. If you have trouble registering multiple individuals, please email admin@claanz.org.au. Total ticket price will include a small additional online booking fee, which Humanitix passes on to a charity.

Call for applications for CLAANZ Interdisciplinary Dialogue Presentation Grants

CLAANZ wants to encourage conference attendance by New Zealand participants and to enhance interdisciplinary dialogue. In light of these objectives, CLAANZ is calling for applications from researchers, those working in charities or advisors to present as part of a panel on either of the following topics:
  • Charities and ESG: Is sustainability standards reporting needed for the sector?
  • The increasing professionalisation of the charity sector and its implications.

CLAANZ is offering three grants of up to NZ$1,000 each to help cover conference registration, accommodation and travel costs. The successful applicant should be prepared to present for around 10-15 minutes on a panel with 3-4 others on the nominated topic. Preference is given to people based in New Zealand and to those who can help broaden the discussion beyond law to include other perspectives, such as an accounting, management, historical or sociological perspective.

To apply, please email admin@claanz.org.au a copy of your CV (max 3 pages) and a one page outline of what you intend to present on one of the nominated topics. The closing date for applications is 30 April 2024 and successful applicants will be notified by 14 May 2024.
